Between the Worlds

Announcement of a working scholarship in Worpswede

The project

The year 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Worpswede artist Bernhard Hoetger. As a person difficult to grasp, as an artist stylistically oscillating, ideologically and politically vacillating between extreme positions, he is an iridescent and equally irritating artistic personality who to this day raises questions and questions and puzzles to this day: poses riddles. Under the title Zwischen den Welten (Between the Worlds), a survey exhibition will take place at the Große Kunstschau Worpswede on the occasion of his anniversary, explicitly linking his art with our present and juxtaposing his work with current artistic positions. A guiding question is how art can build bridges, connect worlds, cultures and people and open up creative freedom. For the world we live in today is characterized as much by the richness of pluralism and polyphony as by ever-deepening rifts and conflicts between cultures and lifestyles, worldviews and political camps. At the same time, we face historically unique challenges that we can only master in a global community of responsibility. That is why it is more important today than ever to facilitate dialogues and clarify shared values. The title deliberately leaves open which divides can be bridged, which free spaces can be created and which worlds and cultures can be connected. cultures can be connected. For the challenges and possibilities are manifold and neither Hoetger's art nor our near future can be reduced to only one possible explanation. Based on these questions, an artistic impulse for the exhibition is to be developed in the scholarship, which starts from the examination of Bernhard Hoetger, but does not necessarily have to refer to him in the implementation:

Critical reflections are explicitly desired here.
